The Anxious Generation and Play Therapy

Summary:

Jonathan Haidt published The Anxious Generation in March of 2024. According to Dr. Haidt, there are four reforms or new expectations that could provide a different foundation where a healthier kind of childhood could be developed for the digital age. This workshop will discuss Dr. Haidt’s research and the importance of a play-based childhood versus a phone-based childhood. Every therapist, parent, and person needs this information. The workshop will focus on how these research findings can guide your clinical interaction in play therapy.

Learning objectives:

1. Participants will analyze research for the relevance of understanding children in the digital era and play therapy.
2. Participants will critique play therapy interventions through the lens of The Anxious Generation.
3. Participants will design one play therapy intervention based on this framework.

About the Presenter:

Sharolyn Wallace PhD, LCSW, RPT-S, IMHE, Eagala ES/MH has been the Professor of Human Services for 31 years at Tulsa Community College. She has served as the National Board Chair for the Association for Play Therapy, Board Chair for the Oklahoma State Board of Licensed Social Workers, Board Member for the National Association for Social Workers, and Board of Directors for the Association of Social Work Boards. Dr. Wallace has served on the Oklahoma State Boards of Play Therapy and Social Work. In 2016, Dr. Wallace was named the Oklahoma Social Worker of the Year. She was also awarded the C.V. Ramana Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Mental Health of Oklahoma’s Children. She won the prestigious award of Miss Horsemanship at Miss Rodeo USA and Miss Appearance at Pinto International Queen contest. Dr. Wallace is the author of six children’s books “The Adventures of Bruce, Ben, and Gerry” based on the horses at her ranch. She is a sought after speaker and presenter in the areas of equine, play therapy and social work. Dr. Wallace and her husband, Charlie live on the CS Ranch in Hominy, Oklahoma with over 35 beautiful horses.

Noon to 3:15 p.m. This workshop will be in the Parkside cafeteria. Lunch will be during the first 30 minutes of training and a 15 minute break will be provided later. $30 fee covers workshop, lunch and materials.
