Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS)

1/30/2026 Noon – 2pm in the Parkside Cafeteria

Summary:

This lecture will introduce the Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) model, emphasizing the belief that children do well if they can and that challenging behaviors arise from lagging skills and unsolved problems. Participants will learn how CPS shifts practice from reactive discipline to proactive, skill-building problem solving through empathy and collaboration. The session will break down key components of the model, including identifying lagging skills and understanding the structure of Plan B conversations. Through guided activities, participants will practice identifying unsolved problems and engaging in collaborative dialogue using realistic scenarios. Hands-on participation will allow learners to apply CPS strategies in a supportive setting, strengthening both understanding and practical confidence in using the approach. We will also discuss the new SPARK consultation line that can be used to help support coordination and continuity of care upon inpatient discharge.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the CPS framework by explaining the core philosophy that challenging behavior results from lagging skills and unsolved problems rather than willful defiance.
  • Identify lagging skills and unsolved problems contributing to challenging behaviors using CPS-informed assessment and observation.
  • Apply the Plan B problem-solving process to collaboratively and proactively develop mutually satisfactory solutions that build skills and strengthen relationships.
  • Learn about new statewide consultation lines to support continuity and coordination of care.
