Summary:

This presentation will discuss the influence and effects of alcohol throughout human history. It touches on some of the historic development of the substance in the process of time, with individuals gradually falling prey to its powerful grips. The idea is to present different aspects of how alcohol progressed moving from a stress relieving element to a devastating giant, causing great disruption to individuals, to families, and to entire communities. This presentation will show by discussing civil legislation, religious legislation, and the profound influence of this drug, that alcoholism knows no boundaries. Alcohol has a power to attract that has fascinated every generation of people for the past 5 thousand years or more. It is the one major threat to all classes of people, permeating just about every level of society, (politicians, teachers, religious leaders, and all levels of authority, etc.).

It will be discussed also that the creativity of human beings in producing new and “exciting ways” to experience this drug is not new but goes back to ancient times.

Learning objectives:

    • The historic perspective of alcoholism throughout 5 millenniums.
    • The malefic influence of alcohol on all levels of society.
    • The deceitfulness and intrusiveness of alcoholism permeating every layer within the human person.
    • Alcoholism: Psychological dependence (thoughts, emotions, and desires) and behavioral dependence.
    • The negative and harmful effects of alcohol upon individual autonomy.
    • Participants will be familiarized with the parasitic nature of alcoholism.

CEUS : Oklahoma LPC, LADC & CADC (3 hrs. Drug and Alcohol), LCSW, LMFT and Case Management. Nursing certificate of participation.

About the Presenter

S. Ivan Lopes, LPC, LADC

Ivan Lopes was born in Brazil but has lived and worked in the US for over 40 years. He holds a BA in Psychology and an MS in Education/Counseling and Guidance. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor in Oklahoma. Lopes has diverse work experience including extensive work with perpetrators of domestic violence and over 30 years working in substance use and mental health treatment settings. Lopes is author of the books “Law Enforcement: Fight Against Darkness” and “Mental Health and Suicidal Thoughts; The Quest for Life…or Death.” He is an ordained minister and well-known speaker at Oklahoma substance abuse treatment professional training conferences.
