Working with Transgender Individuals

This workshop will assist the mental health professional in gaining an increased understanding of the transgender and gender nonconforming community. Participants will explore the disparities facing transgender people, the health care challenges of the transgender community, learn key terminology and gain competencies in working with this community. Disproportionately high rates of substance use are seen among gay and transgender people as they struggle to cope daily with self-acceptance, discrimination and stigma. Substance use disorders are frequently co-occurring with other mental health concerns. Specific understanding of the trans community aids the counselor in effective care planning and provision.

Being Good While Doing Good: Ethical, Legal and Professional Behavioral Health Practice

This workshop will explore the guidance, interplay and challenges offered by the variety of legal obligations, ethical responsibilities and clinical pragmatics impacting behavioral health practice. Focus will be given to some of the most important, common and potentially problematic responsibilities and conflicts confronting clinicians across practice settings and activities.
