SPRAVATO® (esketamine)
Parkside Psychiatric Hospital & Clinic is pleased to offer SPRAVATO® (esketamine) to patients in northeastern Oklahoma. SPRAVATO is the first nasal spray medication specifically for adults with treatment-resistant depression. Spravato is not approved for use in children at this time.
Do you live with treatment – resistant depression? If you’ve tried two or more antidepressant medications and are still struggling with depressive symptoms, SPRAVATO may offer rapid relief. Unlike traditional antidepressants which may take weeks to reach maximum efficacy, Spravato works rapidly and can bring the antidepressant response in hours to days. This quickened effectiveness can be both lifesaving and dramatically supportive in quality of life for depressed patients.
SPRAVATO® (esketamine) is a prescription nasal spray
SPRAVATO® is a prescription nasal spray that’s used concurrently with an oral antidepressant to treat:
• Adults with treatment-resistant depression (TRD)
• Depressive symptoms in adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) with suicidal thoughts or actions.
Spravato is an easy to use nasal spray device and can be self-administered under health care provider supervision.
Proven effective in adult clinical studies
SPRAVATO was studied in adults with treatment-resistant depression.
• After four weeks, patients taking SPRAVATO and an oral antidepressant saw a greater reduction of depressive symptoms (compared to those who received a placebo and an oral antidepressant).
• After 16 weeks of therapy, those patients who stayed on SPRAVATO, along with an oral antidepressant, did better than those who stopped therapy.
SPRAVATO® is most often covered by insurance
• Most insurance plans cover SPRAVATO prescribed by a physician. Contact your insurance provider to confirm coverage. Parkside can help with this. Parkside accepts private insurances like Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Humana, United, Tricare and many others. Parkside also accepts Medicaid and Medicare.
SPRAVATO® is administered under Parkside’s medical supervision
If you decide SPRAVATO is right for you, an intake appointment will be scheduled. Prior history of antidepressant medication use will be verified, and insurance authorizations obtained. You can self-refer, but your provider’s referral can be helpful. Some things to know:
• SPRAVATO is taken with an oral antidepressant.
• SPRAVATO nasal spray is administered under the supervision of a Parkside provider.
• After you take SPRAVATO, a Parkside provider will monitor you for at least two hours during the observation period. You will be observed for any serious side effects, including feeling sleepy (sedation); feeling disconnected from yourself, your thoughts, feelings and things around you (dissociation); and possibly increased blood pressure.
• SPRAVATO is typically taken twice a week for the first four weeks.
• After the first four weeks, SPRAVATO is usually taken once a week for a month.
• After this, SPRAVATO is usually taken either once a week or once every two weeks.
