S. Ivan Lopes, LPC, LADC
Summary:
In this presentation, discussion will focus on the aspects of therapeutic modalities such as behavioral and cognitive behavioral therapy, on person-centered, on rational emotive, and social learning concepts in search of what kind of empowerment individuals do possess that actually enables them to provide appropriate response to and the degree to which they can responsibly engage in the treatment process.
We will be providing a “nutshell” analysis of these multiple theoretical approaches, emphasizing in each of them the degree to which they regard the human person either to be capable of providing self-direction, or not. The disregard for the person’s capability is not a strange element within theoretical construct.
Our discussion will carefully consider the value and objectivity of each modality pairing it with the potential possessed by each person in providing an adequate response and satisfactory level of participation in treatment. The best therapeutic modality, if there is such a thing, becomes incomplete if it appears to underestimate human potential and its involvement in treatment, in case it ignores thoughts, emotions, and volitional capability. That would be the equivalent of an individual providing air for people to breathe, not acknowledging that he/she does have a pair of lungs to breathe it in and out.
Learning objectives:
-
- Participants will become better informed about the real value within each therapeutic modality.
- Therapists and help providers will become more aware of what really matters in the therapeutic process if the application of a great therapeutic modality or if the capability that each individual seeking help possesses to respond positively to, or maybe both.
- Participants will become better informed about the important role that thoughts, emotions, volitional capability, and responsible participation in treatment plays in the treatment process.
- Presentation will share ideas on how help providers can help clients to be better engaged, how to motivate, and how to better empower each client.
