Facilitated by: S. Ivan Lopes, LPC, LADC
Summary:
The Brain Quadrant promotes understanding of the harmful effects of drugs/alcohol within the human brain, mimicking psychiatric symptoms. The population presenting with mental illness and having drugs on board is the most common one in all levels of care. Drugs and/or alcohol use, leading to a disrupting of brain function is phenomenon not yet fully understanding by neurological science and it is certainly one that causes much puzzling to service providers. The brain quadrant facilitates understanding and helps to raise awareness about the importance of a multidimensional assessment approach so that for each individual seeking help we can provide treatment for all conditions and for all the problems that these conditions, i.e., mental health and chemical substance abuse cause.
1. Participants will have increased knowledge of the correlation that exists between psychiatric symptoms and chemical substance use.
2. Presentation will facilitate learning about neurological transmission and the chaos caused in the synaptic gap due to drug and alcohol ingestion.
3. Participants will have better understanding of the euphoric and dysphoric as taken to abnormal levels by the effects of drug and/or alcohol use.
4. Participants will participate in discussion about mental illness due to brain pre-disposition and mental illness due to drugs/alcohol use.
